Autonomous surface vehicle shortened as ASV are crewless watercraft automobiles or automobiles, which operate on water surface. USVs which is the abbreviated for unmanned surface vessel has the same meaning and functions as ASVs. They are important part of oceanography since they can reach places that drifting or moored weather buoys cannot access. These devices are cheaper to construct compared to research and weather vessels. Their sizes vary depending on function they are made for.

All models are self-propelled, thus the name. The design includes wave gliders, which utilize wave energy for propulsion while solar cells power them around. Using this energy they can drift and remain a float for a long time to allow collection of data. The vessels are used for military and academic applications. When intended for naval use they are modified to include offensive capabilities.

They can be used to spy on or destroy enemy combat ships, submarines, or other sea vessels. They play a major role in anti-submarine, electronic, special, and mine warfare missions. Standard models are 39 feet or 12 meters long and displace about 7.7 tons. They have the ability to attain speeds above 35 knots, which is approximately 65 kilometers per hour.

They built with load capacity of around 2300 kilograms or 5000 pounds of equipment. This design matches the handling and weight restrictions of inflatable hull boat. ASVs have highly developed control mechanism for remote operation and navigation. ASV can switch from remote to manned operation with easy during missions. USVs are built to serve for 48 hours or more of undisrupted operation.

At times they may tow counterattack systems, which discharge both acoustic and magnetic waves that may trigger or set off influence mines within a safe range. USVs may be armed with sideward scan sonar sensors for hunting mines. The very equipment may be applied in detecting and destroying merged unmanned automobiles. ASVs are categorized amongst war ships under the USA navy.

Most militaries do not send them out except when certain about their suitability for that given mission. Having these vehicles strengthens the ability of any army, considering their under and surface abilities. USVs are sophisticated in comparison to manned and merged vehicles, bearing in mind their big payload capacity, longer endurance, and high power output. They have an additional advantage due to their greater danger tolerance.

They can be deployed to places with area and anti-access policy. They can be incorporated in rescue and search missions, training, and testing. To operate them effectively they must be in areas with good network coverage so as to allow communications. ASVs can successfully avoid maritime traffic detection and operate in complex environments.

To conclude, any country that wishes to enhance its security must invest in research and development. It must embrace technology for it to survive. Countries bordering the ocean must protect their waters from intruders. Acquiring and making unmanned surface vessels part of its surface force can be a big step towards achieving this goal. Weather forecasting and collection of information on weather pattern becomes easy with these types of boats.
