Motorcycle riders will from time to time require replacement parts for their bike due to break downs to make modifications. There are some things to be taken into consideration when selecting Harley Davidson parts. Many of these components can be quite expensive so some time spent researching prices and suppliers is important.

Almost all parts are readily available even for older models and most can be purchased from official dealers or bike shops. Everything from the smallest components to complete exhaust systems and engines are stocked for the various models. When replacing an item due to failure it is always the better option to use an original part rather than an aftermarket one.

In addition to stores there are now thousands of online sellers who can supply owners with the items they need within a few days. At first glance these will often appear to be cheaper than in shops but postage costs will need to be added. Due to the fact that most courier firms will charge by weight it should be noted that large bulky items can be quite expensive to ship.

Second hand yards can also be a useful place to visit when sourcing replacement parts for a motorcycle. Buying pre used items can often save a substantial amount of money as long as they have been inspected and are of the correct spec. It is always advisable when buying parts from these yards to take along the old ones so that comparisons can be made to ensure they match up.

When buying new parts for customization of a motorbike there are infinite options and a good custom bike can be worth a lot more than a stock model. Additions such as a handmade seat, air brushed steel and engraved exhausts can improve the look of a model significantly. Hand stitched luggage and leather bags are also very popular among bikers to make their model a true one off.

Before customizing a bike there a couple of things to take into account beforehand which can prevent costly mistakes. Many clubs and shows will not allow a bike to be entered into competition if it is not a standard model so checks should be made first. Also if using aftermarket parts any warrantees on the bike may be affected so it is a god idea to speak with a dealer first to avoid this.

When changing essential mechanical components rather than cosmetic ones it is always a good idea to speak with an expert technician first. An experienced mechanic will be happy to advise on where to source items and this could save time and money especially with a vintage bike. If entrusting the work to a professional in most cases they will supply the bits themselves as part of the job.

After new items have been purchased and fitted it is good practice to keep the old ones if they are still functional. If the motorbike is to be resold or traded these old bits can be refitted or passed on to the new owners. The same should be done with custom parts as although they can add value many people will prefer a factory standard bike when buying one.
