A hot rod is a type of an old and a classic car that became popular for use by the American people in older times. It contains a large engine and it is also modified to having a linear speed. An origin of the name still remains very unclear today but there are already many origins that are accepted. One of which is the replacement of camshaft to a hotter and newer version that is commonly known as the hot rods or the hot sticks.

One of the most important of hot rods are the frames. So this article will be giving you some simple ideas on the processes of fabricating hot rod frames. And what this article will be providing is for a ladder type of frames.

First is to start on cutting the frame sections. Do a sketch of the frame that you will make before going to the shop in turning your dreams into reality. Use the measurements that are in your plan in cutting the side rails and also the two elements of a rear kick up that is often called as Z. The tubing size will depend on the horsepower, amount of K and X member supports, and engine.

Second is to create the front frame horn. Though this may not be really that necessary, to have a horn for front frames may give more attractive appearance to rails of frame. The shape of frames may also make chassis stand out from a typical corner square cut of tubing. In creating the horn, sketch first the pattern on paper stocks.

Creating the horns may ask you to first have an experiment for knowing and also, for providing a perfect and a correct proportion of the size of a tubing. After this, do the cutting of pattern and place it into the tubing outlines. The tubing can be cut by the use of a grinder having a very thin blade and a cutting wheel or use a saber saw with a metal blade. Hammer works and also using clamps can be useful in bending top parts of it.

Third, assemble the side rails. This is the time when the side rails are welded. In making a more stable frame, you may go beyond on welding which is to use hidden gussets for reinforcing critical joints of frames. One suggestion is to hide these gussets in the tubing to avoid it from being slapped.

After doing this, hidden gussets are being plug welded. But before this, it is important to make sure that rail sections are square and are true. This may be done through slipping together the sections which are prepared for gussets. Be mindful of all measurements for matching the length of all the sections.

Fourth, attach the cross members. Begin this procedure by clamping the side rails together. This is to scribe the matching lines that are utilized for the positioning of cross members. When these are already clamped, you can mark the reference points, and these marks will be used for the installation of transmission mount, components of front suspension, and the other brackets and mounts.

Most ladder types often are having a cross member. A cross member can be found in either top or front of frames. Normally, the cross members will double just like a transmission mount will double.
