The thrill of hitting the open road on a motorcycle is hard to resist. Yet, it is important to make sure that you understand the basics of safe riding before you ever hop on a bike. As you get accustomed to your new favorite mode of transportation, use these safe motorcycle riding tips to avoid injuries while protecting the safety of the other motorists on the road.

One of the most important safety tips that experienced bikers will ever share is that it is critical to select the right type of motorcycle. Although that sleek high-performance bike may be tempting, it is better to choose a motorcycle that you can handle.

A qualified dealer will be able to show an interested individual a number of different styles that are well suited to their body type, intended purpose, and personal riding style. Upgrades are always possible as one gains more confidence and skills.

Finding the right bike is just the beginning. You will also need to wear the appropriate safety gear when you are riding. Make sure that you have an approved helmet that fits your head correctly along with a face shield to protect you from flying road debris. Always wear long pants and sleeves that can protect you from road rash if you do lay your bike over, and choose gear in bright colors to increase your visibility.

Proper gear is an important part of the ride. New riders are advised to first take a course in motorcycle safety to learn basic defensive techniques for this type of vehicle. For example, certain road hazards such as potholes might not be an issue for automobiles, but they can be extremely risky for cyclists.

Once ready to hit public roadways, keep in mind that one should avoid driving in inclement weather, not get on a bike when distracted or over tired, and always maintain an adequate distance from any other vehicle on the road. It is recommended that whether one be an experienced rider or a novice, that periodic refresher courses be taken in order to remain updated on the latest tips for safe operation.
