One of the things that California requires from all registered vehicles is a verified Vehicle Identification Number or VIN. Most of the time, if your car or truck as been registered in the state for a while, you do not have to worry about it. If you, however, are in one of a few classifications, you may need to have this number identified and verified. The way to do this is to have a licensed VIN verification San Jose DMV needs from you.

When someone brings a new or used car, motorcycle, truck or trailer into the Golden State, that VIN must be verified and recorded, usually when registering it. This is because it has not previously been in the state and so it is not on the database the DMV holds. A new engine being placed into a frame will also create a need for this process as well.

The DMV or Department of Motor Vehicles is one of these places that will verify this information. You might think they are the only ones, given their responsibility in this matter. That would be wrong as licensed individuals, as well as some companies, within the state can also perform this task. Remember this has to be done through someone who actually has a license that the Golden State recognizes.

Many individuals will register with the state to be certified for this work. Some of them are people who deal with cars in other ways. Car dealers, auto mechanics and tow truck drives can become licensed for this work. Notaries and small business people may do this to increase their income levels.

Many of these individuals will come to you, either at home or work, to help you schedule your day easier. Others will accept drive ins at a location illustrated by the advertisement. Still others will want to set up appointments. You can still go into the DMV office and this may disrupt your schedule more than all of the others available for this.

It is easy to figure out whether you need to have this process and certification done. If you are registering your vehicle, at the DMV, and they tell you need it done, it is time. Calling one of the many people or organizations that do this can be done and a decision will present itself to you. Decide whether the best course of action is to drive there or to have them come to your home or office.

Whatever information you have on the vehicle will need to be presented to the verifier when they show. The photo identification for yourself as well as the registration of the vehicle is necessary. Paperwork dealing with weight of trucks or trailers will be needed. Anything else you have about this vehicle, from the previous state or country, will also be viewed. All of this will be documented on the state form Reg 31.

The dirtiest part of the task is the finding of the actual VIN on the vehicle. It may be on the dashboard and or in the trunk. It also could be under the vehicle, on the frame or in the driver side door jamb. Depending on the make, model and country of origin, it could be anywhere and it must be found. The condition of the plate it is on is also noted, especially if it has been altered in any way noticeable.
