Most likely than not you are reading this article because you own a Harley Davidson. In fact you may have owned your hog for a few years, or maybe just a few days, but in either case you want to add some accessories to it. One of these accessories that come into mind are harley saddlebags. In fact they can add more character and manliness to your machine or they can also add more utility or both.

Before your final choosing and purchase decision you should give yourself a little quiz and ask yourself how much of a rider you really are. Try to gauge if you are a hardcore rider that uses the hog everyday 24/7 or do you just use it occasionally when you feel like it. If you are just an occasional rider you may need bags with not much functionality or space as you ride very rarely.

Next to figure out is what you really need saddlebags for. Basically you will jut have two reasons which is you want something to make your bike look good or you want one for some extra utility. In either case you will have different sets of additional criteria for your choice.

If your prime purpose for acquisition is just to get one for looks and looking cool then you will be faced with two design decisions. You will be able to choose between studded and non studded designs for your bike. If currently your hog has studs on its leatherwork or frame then go for the studded design, if not go for the plain. Plain designs can also come complemented with buckles, but the buckles have no practical use whatsoever. Buckles are usually just for decorative purposes.

As for functionality issues, if you do buy this accessory you should look at the capability of it to be locked and secured. This is because if it is used a lot then it needs to have locks so as to keep your items safe if it used to transport and store your items. This is because you do not want your items to be messed with or even stolen on one of your long rides.

The overall purpose will also determine the kind of mounting mechanism that you will use. Thus if you are a frequent user it is best that you install a hard mount or a quick disconnect system for these are more reliable for log term usage. It takes a bit of mechanical skill to install though so be prepared.

Consider the overall price too. Remember that a decent one will set you back around two hundred to three hundred dollars. Anything much more than this can be considered a luxury. Plenty of online stores do offer price discounts and holiday offers.

In the final analysis however you should balance your wants against your needs. Try to make a good balance between this so that you do not waste money at all and your purchase can not only add utility but value added to your hog. It is always a good practice to get all bases covered before making a final buy.
