Buying a diesel truck has many advantages over a standard gasoline-powered truck. The fuel economy is generally better and a diesel engine is more torque so it is more capable of towing heavy loads. Additionally, diesel engines tend to last quite a bit longer than gasoline-powered engines and have fewer maintenance problems in general.

There are fewer models of trucks available with a diesel engine, and typically, trucks with a gross vehicle weight under 8.500 pounds do not have diesel engine option. There are three main manufacturers of diesel trucks in the United States - Ford, Ram and GMC.

The Ford models are called Super Duty trucks and the diesel engine is called a Power Stroke. Currently a 6.7L Power Stroke engine is available as an option for the F-250 XL model, with a base price of just under $38,000. The price continues to climb as the models become fancier, and the diesel engine is a standard feature. The Ford F-450 Platinum is the top of the line, with a starting stick price of more than $67,000.

General Motors produces two different makes of diesel trucks, the Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sienna. The Silverado diesels use a Duramax 6.6L V8 turbo engine which is capable of pulling more than 20,000 pounds. The Silverado diesels range in price from about $40,000 to about $60,000 for the top-of-the-line model. The Sierra 3500 HD is the diesel version of the Chevy Sierra with a base sticker price of about $44,000 and the same engine as the Silverado.

Ram is yet another option for diesel truck enthusiasts. Formerly known as Dodge Ram, the Ram trucks are produced by Chrysler. Top of the line versions of the Ram trucks come equipped with a 6.7 L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. The least expensive Ram trucks with a manual diesel engine start at just under $40,000 and go up to about $50,000 for a Ram 2500 Power Wagon Laramie with a crew cab.

In order to decide which truck is the right one for you, make a list of your wants and needs and find the best model. Also look at the recent consumer reviews for the trucks, so that you know what to expect as far as potential problems are concerned. You might also consider purchasing a used truck, which can be a less costly option. Since diesel engines last longer than gas-powered, going used can be a safe bet.

If you want to upgrade your diesel truck with aftermarket accessories, such as a tuner, a cold air intake systems or an aftermarket exhaust system, it is important that you know whether you have a Power Stroke, Cummins or Duramax. Confirm that these aftermarket parts are sold for the specific engine that you have and not necessarily the brand of truck.
