When your car breaks down in some instances the problem can be serious and having a mechanic carry out some repairs will not fix the fault. With a major failure you may find you need to replace some components and this can often be costly. A cheaper way around this is to locate rebuilt diesel engines as opposed to buying a factory unit.

With a minor failure the solution may often be to replace parts of the motor such as cylinder heads or engine blocks. With manufacturers units costing many thousands of dollars each, changing components can often be a cheaper option. Some of the parts will start from just a couple of hundred bucks for small repairs and increase to thousands for complex engine rebuilds.

Most mechanics shops will offer you a service where they will strip and rebuild your motor and you should do a little shopping around to get a good deal. Another way is to check some of the web sites and a large number of these will have rebuilt motors in stock. This can be a better option as it will avoid sending away your engine.

A rebuilt engine for most of the popular models should be fairly straight forward to find and will cost from as little as 1500 dollars. If you own a rarer car or vintage vehicle then sourcing a reconditioned unit may be a little more difficult and costly. Motoring enthusiast clubs are a great place to get some information and specialist advice.

If your old unit has to be shipped there are some things to think about such as who will remove it and how you are going to send it. Some amateur mechanics will be able to take out an engine but the better option is to have a trained technician to do this. Specialist tools may be required and the correct lifting gear should be used to avoid any injury.

Couriers will price their carriage according to the gross weight of your package to be sent and an engine can be expensive. Some companies will include the shipping in the final cost of your rebuild and this is a good money saving option. When sending a motor by road, make sure that everything is well protected with the correct crates and source insurance cover in case of damage.

The firms who carry out rebuilds will usually offer you a time based or mileage warranty. This will usually be three to five years or ten to one hundred thousand miles and you should choose the one that best suits your usage. When a guarantee is offered it is usually the case that any future work on the motor will need to be done by the rebuilding firm.

Having your motor rebuilt can be a more cost effective way to get your vehicle running but it can also affect the future value. Many car clubs will disqualify cars that are not original and will not accept them into a show. By law, your insurance company will need to be informed of the changes as the engine number on file will probably need to be changed.
