While it might seem like a tire is just a tire, special performance trucks deserve better than a typical factory-issue tire. While these tires are fine for every day driving, many people want to improve their trucks ability to race or go off-road or just want to improve the appearance of the truck for day-to-day driving. Here are some tips for those who are thinking about upgrading your tires.

One option that has become popular since the 1970s is plus sizing. This just means that you will upgrade your truck with high quality tires that are larger than those put on at the factory. You can just increase the tire size by an inch and leave the wheels the same, which is known as a Plus Zero upgrade. You also can go with a Plus One option, which means you have increased both the tire and wheel sizes by one inch. Plus Two upgrades the tire and wheels by yet another inch. This improves the truck's appearance but also improves stability as well as handling.

Sometimes your vehicle dealer will offer plus sizing as an option, but it can be better to find a company that specializes in aftermarket products for trucks. These distributers tend to have great deals on tires, such as the Toyo brand, and wheels, such as those produced by BMF. You will want to get the highest quality tires and wheels to ensure optimum performance, as well as an attractive finish.

Wheels and tires are expensive in general, so it is important that you keep the tires well maintained in order to prevent problems and decrease the life of the tire. There are several ways to do this, including constant monitoring of your tire pressure. Every time you fill up the truck, take a minute to check the tire pressure. It only takes a few minutes to check and just a few minutes to add air, and this can really prolong tire life.

You also need to take your truck to a mechanic or tire store and have the technicians check your alignment and do a tire rotation. Inconsistencies in alignment have a detrimental effect on how your tires wear down. Be sure to have this checked, especially if you hit a particularly big pothole or perhaps hit a curb, as these bumps can alter alignment. Tire rotation ensures that your tires will wear more evenly, and typically tires need to be rotated about every 5,000 miles.

Of course, there are many more cool upgrades that one can make to their truck. Some modifications to consider are installing an aftermarket exhaust system, a cool air intake and a tuner or programmer. There are many items out there that can increase your miles per gallon, as well as the power of your engine, and most are fairly easy to install yourself.
