The air is crisp, and strains of hymns sometimes find its way to the radio--yes Christmas is here. What a lovely time this truly is. We find people milling about, making repeated trips to the mall to get the presents they have on layaway for the ones they love. In every other street corner, you see Santa ringing his bell, with a black pot receiving freewill love offerings to the poor among us. And what else is a more loved and familiar image of the season than well decorated christmas trees? They are firmly set in every home, a willing listener to the family's holiday memories.

The tree is the meeting place of hearts and kindred spirits sharing a laugh over a cup of steaming eggnog. Many of these families have probably bonded over the trip to local christmas tree shops looking for the perfect tree to bring back home. The tree will be the happy participant of many joyful reunions and delicious dinners that are sure to have taken place.

Maybe there is already a worn and cherished family tree waiting in the basement. If you did not have a chance to bond over christmas tree shop hopping, surely you will get a chance in christmas tree decorating. Let the children in on it to create simply priceless moments. Allow them to design, plan and execute all aspects of embellishing the tree.

Consider having a cartoon or anime inspired tree. Seems out of the ordinary right? That makes it extra special, one the kids will remember forever. As they feverishly work on the cutouts and collecting of appropriate ornaments, pre decorate the tree by draping it with christmas lights. They can hang their little works of art after. When all is done, have one child (elected by his siblings and cousins) crown the christmas tree with a special angel or star and make this occasion tradition for the years to come.

Bring the child to your shopping trips and let them choose the gifts they will want to give to their friends. They will understand the value of wise buying and you will learn more about how your child thinks about people and the value of money. Allow them to pick out the gift wrapping paper and ribbons and let them wrap the presents themselves. Out of all the gifts under the tree, it is the home-made and awkward looking package that will be remembered.

Even if it seems like trouble waiting to happen, put the presents under the tree. It will be shaken, studied and measured for days on end --but believe me it's safer there. People expecting gifts are keener that criminals sniffing out the witness who ratted them out. At least if you put the presents out in the living room, nobody will dare open it in full view for everyone will see.

And finally, allow me to give you an advice I wish I received in my earlier holidays shared with my own family-keep a video camera on hand at all times. Priceless memories come up as the days that precede Christmas day wear on. Decorated christmas trees witness every joyful tear and laughter between loved ones, enjoy them while they are around.
