You might have realized your differential requires service, or discovered it as a method on the service selection. Differential service encompasses multiple issues, so let's first examine what a differential does.

When you drive through a turn, your external wheels and inside wheels turn at diverse speeds. Similar to the vehicles moving around a race track - those driving in the outside lanes have an increased distance to drive as opposed to the automobiles in the inside lanes. The differential is really what allows the interior and exterior drive wheels to turn at fairly unique speeds so the tires will not jump or skip while making corners, or drop traction in dirt or snow. Differentials have gears within them that transmit the power from the drive train towards your wheels - and that's why they're also known as gear boxes. The gears have to be very robust to perform this work, and they must be thoroughly protected so that they'll keep going.

All cars have some sort of differential. If you've got a front-wheel drive car, your differential is also known as a transaxle and is based in the front. If you possess rear-wheel drive, the differential is in the back of the vehicle. If you own a 4-wheel drive vehicle, you'll find a differential in the front and the back - and at the center also. The middle differential changes for distinctions in speed within the front and back wheels.

Differential fluid lubricates and cools the gears. As time goes on, the fluid could get dirty from pieces of the gears milling off. The components that make the fluid clean and secure the differential wear out with time. So your vehicle vendor has due intervals so you can get your differential fluid swapped out.

Differentials are rough operating devices, and, with the gears in a manual transmission, have to be maintained continually with high-quality, replacement fluid. Your automotive service consultant can give you more details regarding when your next differential service is strongly suggested. You must consider asking if they have a log of when the service was last executed.

Just as with a large number of service intervals, if you are driving during worse conditions, you should service your differential on a regular basis. "Serious service" conditions are identified in the majority of owner's manuals, and may include: recurrent starts and stops, short trips, wintry weather, warm weather and towing. All of these scenarios add to the hassle of the car as well as its parts. Additionally, off-roading can be certainly difficult for differentials, particularly if you cross venues. Ideal service will lengthen the life span of your gears and get them working more quickly.
