Every so often, some consider getting personalized license plates, whether to be special like everybody else or maybe to be humorous. There's definitely no problem, but there are a few things one should bear in mind about custom license plates.

Licenses must be authorized

Recently, Car and Driver conducted an interview with Melanie Stokes who is on the Word Committee in VA. The committee, which plays on Orwell, is in charge of approving customized license plates submitted in Virginia as part of the VA Department of Motor Automobiles.

Before an individual can put a custom license plate on their car, they have to submit it for approval and get permission. There are 50 Word committees that approve plates like these.

Attempting to get by

You most likely will not do too well if you try to be clever with the state DMV since you do not get to put whatever you need on your car. Most people think that the person who is paying the car finance company should be able to put whatever they want on the car, but that is not how things work.

As cute as one person might think it is to have some manner of obscenity on their license plate, not everyone agrees, hence the reviews. Each state, according to Esquire, sets its own rules and has its own lists of banned words and phrases for license plates. Lists of banned license plates are widely accessible, which can effortlessly give one an idea that state review bodies do pay attention and will turn down a customized license plate that is too risqu.

There are no specific guidelines that have to be followed. In fact, all the rules and decisions are completely arbitrary, according to the Baltimore Sun. At the Maryland DMV, "PIMP" was banned, but "FATPIMP" was not. Also, "TOILET" was banned but "THEPUKE" was not.

Many people can appeal

However, mistakes can be made and most states do have an appeals process for people who believe their license plate was disallowed unjustly. Besides submissions from the peanut gallery, people who want a personalized license plate will have to pay customized license plate charges for their vanity plates.

There are bad things that can happen with the personalized plates though, according to Yahoo. One male, Danny White, gets tickets each month for automobiles in many different states that do not have identification on them because his plates say "NO TAGS." This is just one of the possible consequences.
