Whenever you're planning a road trip somewhere, and even when you're just going to work, it's always good to have an emergency kit in your vehicle. You never know when you may need it or when you may be of assistance to someone else. Having this kit can save you time and money for things that you would already have stored in your trunk or in your back compartment if you have an SUV.

Auto emergency kits should be filled with a few important items. A durable flashlight with working batteries is a must. Trying to deal with a mechanical problem after dark is impossible. You need light to see what you are doing and try to figure out what is wrong. Leather gloves will offer protection for the hands if a tire needs to be changed. They will also keep the hands warm in the winter. Breaking down in the rain or snow presents even more problems. Include a waterproof poncho so you can stay dry if it becomes necessary to leave the car.

Pack some nonperishable food and drinking water in your auto safety kit. Without water, it is easy to become dehydrated, especially during the summer months. Granola bars or trail mix will help maintain your strength if you are stranded for a long period of time.

Getting stranded in a remote location or in a bad storm will sometimes require you to wait for help to arrive. Rescue workers may have to travel a far distance to reach you. It could become necessary to wait for the bad weather to pass. With food and water included in your auto care kit, there is no need to worry about getting hungry or thirsty for awhile.

If at all possible, attempt to reach a lit area. It can be dangerous parking in a dark lot but if you have no choice, your vehicle survival kit should have a flashlight and perhaps a light stick or two. Check the batteries periodically to make sure they are still good. All auto safety kits should also contain extra batteries in case you have to use the flashlight for a long period of time and end up draining the power. Regardless of trip length, it is best to always be prepared with the proper equipment.
