By definition, towing is the process of coupling one object onto another in order to move it. The lead object, which is used to pull the other one can be anything ranging from motorized land vehicles, waterborne vessels to animals and people. In Maryland towing vehicles are referred to as wreckers, recovery trucks, breakdown trucks, or breakdown lorries depending on the type and the location.

There are various reasons why one may need their vehicle to be towed, but the main ones are two. The first one is when the vehicle is disabled and unable to move by itself and second is due to illegal parking. These kinds of services are mostly rendered by road service operators. Local governments also render these services, for example in the situation of vehicles that need impounding.

Even though this activity sounds simple, it is a bit challenging and demands some level of professionalism to be safe and successful. The safety precautions that must be observed are concerned mostly with connections, equalizer hitches, and the towing capacity among others. Various bodies in the US have performed several studies about this exercise with most of them concluding that citizens lack adequate knowledge about the activity. This has resulted into establishment of programs to train the public.

Tow capacity defines the maximum weight that a certain tow vehicle is meant to tow. This capacity is very essential because the stability of the vehicle while in movement is dependent on it. Most tow trucks have the value of tow capacity written on their sides. Along the capacity, the height of the vehicle is the other important factor to consider. The height should be considered if one has to pass through places where vehicle height is restricted to a specific level.

Tongue weight is the other weight-related factor that determines how safe and successful the process can be. Tongue weight expresses the weight with which the cargo or car being towed presses down onto the hitches of the tow vehicle. This value needs to lie within given limits because too much of it can cause breakdown in the tow vehicle while little can cause the car to sway during movement.

Proper lighting system is another important requirement for success in towing particularly at night. Usually, both the load and the wrecker should have properly lit headlights to stop possible accidents from happening. Furthermore, the back must have lights for warning vehicles emerging from behind.

Wide view side mirrors are an additional safety measure if one is travelling through traffic or highly populated areas. The vehicles should be serviced before being taken on the road for the job. In case one is driving though an area they are new, it is good to know all traffic laws concerning towing in the area before setting out.

Towing is one of the main processes employed by citizens of Maryland to move belongings from place to place. As such, local authorities have enforced many laws that ensure safety to the public and other road users. Maryland is also packed with professional road service operators who provide services at reasonable costs.
