That Italy is one of the most popular holiday destinations is not a surprise of course. However, what is surprising is that a only a small number of holidays in Italy are taken by the coast. With such an array of beach resorts, it is time more people discovered what is on offer.

There is one beach location that has drawn the crowds for many years, and it is in Sardinia that some of the best beaches in Europe are to be found. With the Mediterranean lapping the coast, it is no wonder there is such a rich selection of resorts to choose from.

Tuscany is one of the most popular destinations throughout the country, but a move away from the beautiful countryside and hills delivers some breathtaking beaches. A worthy mention would have to be Monte Argentario.

Here in particular there are some wonderful private villas which can be rented for days or weeks at a time. Though the sea waters are inviting, the appeal of a private pool to relax in through the day or night is always welcome. Other great destinations include the beaches in Gallipoli and Sicily, where Syracuse is a always welcoming.

There is so much more to Sicily however, and not far off the coast are the Egadi Islands. The seafood here is unsurprisingly superb; given the clarity and rich blue-green of the waters on its shore.

For the most opulent of beach holidays, Viareggio on the western coast of Tuscany is amazing. Though out to the east too, in Rimini, both party animals and culture vultures are equally sure of a satisfying stay.

Beach holidays in Italy are not so much underrated, as under recognized. However, with so much variety to choose from, and so many enclaves waiting to be discovered, they really are worth some serious consideration.
