Since the working environment of the equipment is mostly rugged, the design is in a way as to ensure accurate readings in environments with snow, rain, and dust.

The circuitry of the indicator is enclosed by casings made from various materials. Some of the major materials used to make casings include aluminum, plastic, steel, alloys, and fiber. When used well, the operator of the machine with the gadget can do work at a very high rate. In fact, it is even possible to work at night or in areas with poor visibility.

The user is able to take readings in a single glance because most gadgets are calibrated in huge numerical scales. Balls or pointers are used to show readings by resting on the values. Some pointers take a few seconds before settling on the reading.

Factors like manufacturer, accuracy, type of scale, size, response time, and quality play a major role in determining the price.
