If your vehicle suffers a breakdown the problem can sometimes be very serious and having an auto technician carry out repairs will not rectify the fault. With major failures you may find you need to replace components or the complete motor and this is going to be costly. A cheaper alternative is to look for suitable rebuilt engines and it is useful to do some research on the available options.

If your unit is not too badly damaged, replacing the block, crank or the cylinder head may rectify the problem. A factory built unit can run into thousands of dollars, so replacing some of the mechanical components can save money. Replacement components will range in price and will be dependent on which parts are needed to rectify the problem.

Most auto repair shops will offer a service where they are able strip down and rebuild an engine and you should do some shopping around to get the best possible deal. Another option is to check the internet where a lot of suppliers will have ready to fit motors in stock. This can often be a practical solution as it will avoid having to send away your damaged unit.

In most cases a rebuilt unit will be under a guarantee provided by the engineering firm. This will typically be a ten to a hundred thousand miles or three to five year warranty depending on their terms and conditions. If you buy a rebuilt motor you should be mindful that any future mechanical work on it will have to be done by the rebuilding firm to maintain their warranty.

Using the option of a rebuild is friendly on the pocket but it can affect the resale value of a vehicle. It is also worth noting that if you wish to enter a car into a classic show it can be disqualified for not running with its original motor. Your insurers will also need to be told of any major mechanical changes.

A reconditioned power unit for common motor vehicles will range in price from around 1000 to 5000 dollars. An engine for an older or classic vehicle will cost a little more due to the fact that parts are harder to source and not all auto mechanics are qualified to work on some old cars. If the vehicle is an older model it can be useful to seek the advice of a classic motoring club.

If your old power unit has to be sent away to be rebuilt there are some important things to consider such as who will remove it and how it will be shipped. Some amateur auto mechanics will be able to extract an engine but the better option is to use the services of a trained auto technician. Some specialist tools and lifting tackle will be required and health and safety procedures need to be followed.

When you plan to use a courier to move your unit by road it may be costly due to an engines gross weight. Some of the rebuilding businesses will offer free shipping and this is a good money saving option. When you send a power plant by road you will need to package it correctly in a suitable crate to protect it.
