There are over 17,000 used car dealer franchises that are registered in the United States in the year 2011. Even if we consider economic difficulties and cutthroat competition as a cause for it that number to dwindle for the past two years, the fact remains there is a healthy market for used cars not just in the United States but over the world. And why shouldn't there be a healthy market for used cars when they are the most practical solutions for cash strapped car buyers of today?

It is however important that you find out a few things before spending your money on a used car. To start with, it's important to understand that a car, whether it's brand new or used, is not an investment. Brand new cars lose as much as 40% of their original value on their first year; secondhand cars continue to depreciate in value although admittedly, not in the same rate.

Fact is, you would never get back the money you spent buying a car back when it was brand new. Regardless if you buy a brand new or used car, you'd never get your initial "investments" back. Another important thing to understand about buying a used car is unless you are going to buy from a reputable dealer such as Hertz Car Sales or a from the car's first owners, there is no way you can be sure about the history of the vehicle being offered to you.

It is not at all surprising is that there are car dealers that would not be very forthcoming about is the backgrounds of the cars they sell particularly if sad background information would be detrimental to the sale. Quite honestly, doing even a free VIN check on the car would not produce very helpful results.

You should also know and understand that you must never buy a used car that an expert mechanic did not get to inspect or test drive. Always bring your own mechanic with you- someone you trust completely - to inspect the car and test drive it so you would know exactly what it is you're about to spend your money on.

You can visit Hertz Car Sales to get a pretty good idea what you and your mechanics should look for in the used car you are about to spend cash on. Keep in mind that even the cheapest used car you will find will cost you thousands of dollars, still be very careful as to what used car you will buy and where you will buy it from.
