Lime is not some kind of a fertilizer as some people may think. It is better to think of it as a soil conditioner. It is added into the soil to primarily correct the soil acidity. In addition to controlling soil acidity, it also regulates the amount of phosphorus, zinc, copper, some bacteria, magnesium, and calcium. On small pieces of land, the substance can be applied by hand. However, on large tracts a lime spreader becomes useful.

Many spreaders are moved by being attached onto some means of hauling like animals or trucks. Small spreaders have handles for pushing and pulling. The size dictates whether they come with one or two pairs of tires. Their high weight makes them to make a trail of wheel prints anywhere they go through. They must therefore be driven on lands without crops. If passed in an area with crops, they damage young plants.

Spreaders have varying volumes. Bigger commercial makes can hold tons of lime whilst small models only accommodate a handful. Unless the device is for leasing, the volume chosen should depend on size of lawn or farm and frequency of utilization. The bins which accommodate the conditioner may be constructed of alloys, metals, plastics, or timber at times. Choosing the material of the bin should be done carefully because lime corrodes some materials.

Various models release the pellets in different ways. In some models, the pellets are released continuously while in others they do so at certain controllable intervals. The mode of spreading used by the machine is indicated in the manual that come with it. Normally this rate is adjustable in those that emit pellets at intervals. Experts advise that the conditioner should be applied at intervals. The interval of application should depend on the degree of acidity of soil.

Latest brands have multiple bins. Also, they can do more than one activity like applying fertilizer and other additives. Normally lime is contained in one bin and other substances in the other bins. Application of all the substances can also be done concurrently. This saves on fuel that could be used to power the howler applying various additives. This feature is very vital to people with large lands to work on.

When purchasing a spreader, the point of connection and the method of connection should be considered. Problems may arise during connecting because some hinges may not be compatible. The way the bin is shaped is essential in order to prevent contents from pouring during movement. Calibrated bins provide a means of gauging how much lime has been used.

Additional accessories such as spare tires and rear lights are worth checking for. Most manufacturers incorporate modern technology such as hydraulic spinner systems to make their products stand out in the market. Since the working environment is mostly moist and humid causing rust on the device, choosing products made from stainless steel is a better idea.

Another matter of contention is the cost. It is advisable to compare price quotes from various producers if one is not sure about cost. A combination of price and features that meets personal requirements should be the one to be chosen.
