While most of us do not spend our leisure time perusing California's vehicle codes, there are actually many interesting facts that apply to drivers in the state. In addition to the general rules of the road, there are also some fairly unique additions to the vehicle code that you might not know about.

It is important to dress properly for driving, especially if you are female. In California, the vehicle code prohibits women from wearing a house coat when driving. However, one can drive barefoot and possibly even naked, provided that the person in question is not in view of the public, which would constitute a public decency stature violation. So it is probably a good idea to drive wearing clothes.

While Google actually does have a car that drives around California without a driver, the vast majority of vehicles on the road always have a driver. If you car does decide to head out for a drive without you, be sure it knows better than to go faster than 60 miles per hour. It is illegal for the driver-less car to go any faster than that, and probably not a great idea in general for vehicles to be driving around without a driver.

Typically, it is not a good idea to throw anything out of your car window. Not only is it obviously a potential danger to other drivers, it is illegal to throw almost everything out a vehicle window anyway so you risk getting a ticket. However, it is perfectly legal to throw water out your window as well as chicken feathers. So be sure all of your ducks and geese keep their feathers inside your car at all times.

California is hardly the only state in the Union that has a spate of odd vehicle code regulations. In some states, it seems important to state the obvious, especially in North Carolina where it is illegal for people to play out in traffic and also illegal to drive on a sidewalk. Georgia also has a fairly obvious driving law, prohibiting people from driving on a playground, or consider the law in Alabama that prohibits driving while wearing a blindfold.

Most of the California Vehicle Code includes laws and regulations meant to keep drivers, pedestrians and passengers as safe as possible. Smog check requirements, for instance, keep our air far cleaner than in years past. Smog checks are required for most gas-powered vehicles biennially to ensure that your vehicle is not producing too much gas that contributes to smog. Berkeley has many smog test only stations, and some even provide customers with a reduced cost if they make an appointment using the station's internet site.
