When purchasing anything that costs a substantial amount of money, it is certainly prudent to consider all factors that affect the sale before you do spend a single cent. This is particularly true when the "anything" you are about to buy is a used auto.

Used cars sold by private sellers are subject to more inquiry than used cars that are sold in a dealership because although used cars from private sellers are no doubt cheaper, they just do not offer the same amount of guarantee in terms of reliability and safety than the cars you can buy from dealers. You can try searching here to find used cars sold by dealers and owners and make a comparison of prices. But if you really want to go for a used car being offered by its current owner, better check out a few helpful tips to save you some money.

A very important thing that you need to consider when you buy used cars being sold by private sellers is that the vehicle is being offered on an "as is" basis. Unlike the cars that you can obtain from reputable establishments, such as Hertz Car Sales, you cannot have the assurance that the car is maintained on a regular basis or it was reconditioned properly; there is no certification (most of the time) or even maintenance records and you have no idea how well the previous owner drove it.

To make sure that you are not going to spend thousands of dollars buying someone else's problems, have your own mechanic check the car and take it for a test drive so you would get professional advice on whether or not you should buy the car.

It would also be a good idea to do a little research on used car values and prices before you check the car you are interested in. It is important that you investigate on the vehicle's actual value so you would be well informed and able to negotiate properly for the car.

Doing so will also help you determine if the sellers are asking you for too much for the said car. If you must stick to your budget, stay away from cars that have a lot of added features or 'enhancements'; owners add a lot of features to their cars on the belief that they can sell it for more money but you need not pay for add-ons that to your point of view are not necessary. And to help you find the best deals, make it a point to compare at least two cars and sellers with each other before you decide on buying.
