Several design choices are available. Considering a 30 or 50 amp fifth wheel trailers is one of the first priorities. More amperage means more flexibility when running several things at the same time. An example is running the air conditioner while warming up a meal in the microwave and making a pot of coffee. Other considerations include how many slide outs are preferred. The more slide outs, the more room there is. Options also include winterized packages or power and manual awnings.

A design in particular changes the name of the fifth wheel. When there is a hitch in the front and a ramp at the end of it, the name changes to toy haulers. A toy hauler allows for easy shipping and storage of ATVs, scooters, snow mobiles, and motorcycles.

This type of living can be very small and compact. Appliances and electronics are very small. The microwave is usually big enough for at least one plate and the oven has at least one rack in the center. The stove is usually just as small with two or three burners and a small range hood to go with it.

Most would like to downsize and choose a fifth wheel in doing so. Downsizing is done because the family is smaller or the price is much more feasible. The price of a fifth wheel is much more economical than an apartment home. In addition, most apartments or rentals do not have peace and quiet or a yard. RV parks can offer free amenities such as internet, cable, water, and sewage, which in turn alleviates expenses.

Liquid propane can have its advantages because it is mobile and easily refilled. The disadvantage is on size and how often the tank needs to be refilled. In the winter the fifth wheeler can use an extensive amount of liquid propane. Propane is already used for heating the water, stove, and oven on a daily basis. In the winter additional usage is for keeping the home warm and comfortable.

The second downside is being able to pull the home with a full sized vehicle. The truck must be of size and weight to pull a load of this magnitude. This is not an issue when one has the automobile before he or she purchases the trailer. On the other hand, purchasing a trailer without a vehicle does not mean a request for assistance is impossible. Renting a vehicle for pulling is another way to pull the home.

Since this home pulls very well, it is ideal for traveling to any location. When moving from one place to another, little is needed to connect and detach from the ground. If the home has slide outs, the flip of a switch easily brings them in for easy roaming. Several locations have RV parks specifically made for a portable trailer. These trailers are also taken to areas where tents are allowed and used in a similar fashion.

Class A trailers are very similar except they are driven and not pulled. In some cases the Class A will pull the small vehicle. Unfortunately there is added maintenance and is not as cost efficient as a fifth wheel. When the home is immovable because of maintenance or motor issues, leisure travel is almost impossible.
